Pregnancy Pain

A woman’s entire body undergoes significant changes during pregnancy. Outside of the obvious back strain, caused by the weight of the growing baby, other notable changes include the release of the hormone ‘relaxin’, which occurs in the latter stages of pregnancy. This hormone serves to loosen the body’s ligaments, and can often lead to joint and back pain.

During or after pregnancy women may also benefit from physiotherapy treatment to help manage incontinence, varicose veins, carpal tunnel and fluid retention.

Some of the treatment options commonly used by Queensland Physiotherapy in helping women to cope with pregnancy related changes include:

  • Core strength training
  • Muscle retraining
  • Positioning for optimal spinal posture
  • Education regarding lifting of your child
  • Bracing recommendations
