Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA)

Queensland Physiotherapy provides DVA Physiotherapy under the Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA) Allied Health Professionals program.

Veterans must obtain a referral from their general practitioner (D904 or equivalent) and bring their DVA card to the initial appointment. After receiving the referral, we bill DVA directly, so veterans do not need to worry about gap payments or surcharges.

How the DVA Physiotherapy Cycle Works

The DVA Allied Health program uses a cycle-based system to ensure consistent and appropriate care for veterans. Here’s how it works:

  1. Initial Referral: Veterans get a valid referral from their GP. This referral usually covers up to 12 sessions or a treatment cycle lasting up to 12 months, based on the GP’s recommendations.
  2. Treatment Cycle: During the cycle, physiotherapists tailor treatment plans to meet each veteran’s specific needs.
  3. Completion and Review: At the end of the cycle, the physiotherapist provides a report to the referring GP. The GP evaluates the veteran’s progress and decides if additional treatment is necessary.
  4. New Cycle: If further care is required, the GP issues a new referral to begin another treatment cycle.

This system provides veterans with effective care while fostering seamless communication between healthcare providers.

We recommend that patients first confirm with the DVA that their treatment is covered and relevant to their condition. To find out which veterans can access physio, see the DVA website here.
